Man arrested after SWAT standoff on Indy's east side

The incident started around 10 a.m. Tuesday in the 7200 block of East Raymond Street, near South Hunter Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD officers have a man in custody after he allegedly fired a shot at another person, ran away from the scene and then barricaded himself inside of a home Tuesday morning on the southeast side of Indianapolis.

Officers believe the shots fired call happened in the 7200 block of East Raymond Street, near South Hunter Road, around 10 a.m. July 9.

"They spoke to a victim, and they quickly located a suspect. Unfortunately, that suspect fled from our officers on foot," IMPD Officer Amanda Hibschman said.

IMPD then set up a perimeter on Chesterhill Lane, near East Raymond Street and South Franklin Road on the east side of Indianapolis, using drones and swat.

"I locked my doors when I first got home because everything was going on," said Kate, a neighbor. "There were police all over the street. It was very scary. I didn't know if I could get home or not, but I was able to come through the back way and come around."

Neighbors said the incident left them concerned.

"There were at least 20 cars in here, plus swat. It was very scary, and we have a quiet neighborhood, a very quiet neighborhood," Kate said.

IMPD said they helped encourage the man to come out of the home.

"When they are on a track, they are given constant commands to the suspect to surrender with their hands up, and in this case, thankfully, that's what the suspect did — they surrendered peacefully without  further incident," Hibschman said.

There were no reports of injuries. Police said it is unclear what led up to the shooting.

Police have not shared the preliminary charges the man was arrested for. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office will make the final charging decision.
