ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. (WTHR) – A burglar made it an easy arrest for police when he accidentally mistaken a police car for his getaway Lyft ride.
The burglar was fleeing a home that he had broken into after waking up the homeowners.
Police say the suspect, 28-year-old Nicholas Maziot, was trying to open a door when he woke the couple around 10 p.m.
According to police, Maziot was homeless and had climbed into the couple's home through a second-story window. He then climbed back out the window and jumped from the roof to the ground.
Officers from several police departments were responding to the call when Maziot requested a ride away from the scene through the Lyft app.
Maziot was hiding in a backyard about one block away from the home he broke into. He thought his ride had arrived but instead of his Lyft, he climbed into a police car.
Police say the 28-year-old admitted to breaking into the home. He had believed no one was home at the time, according to reports.
Maziot was sent to the Bergen County Jail. He faces charges of burglary, criminal trespass and theft.
