ANDERSON, Ind. — Anderson Police continue to investigate a mass shooting that injured seven people this weekend. The shooting stemmed from a "Stop the Violence" block party.
"It's very sad that was the location and what happened," Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said.
Police say just after midnight Sunday morning, officers responded to the party near the intersection of 22nd Street and Arrow Avenue. Over 300 people were at the party when police arrived.
"Rounds were being fired when police were standing there, I can't imagine anything more dangerous than that," Cummings said.
Once officers made their way through the crowd, they found those seven victims with gunshot wounds. There were also several weapons at the scene.
The Madison County Hand-up Initiative, an anti-violence group, says they are shocked a party meant to prevent violence ended this way.
"Nobody is prepared for something like this to happen, it just sends a shockwave through the entire community," Jason Fullington, with the Madison County Hand-up Initiative, said.
Fullington told 13News this isn't the first time a shooting happened at a party in Anderson. He said the city should not only talk about preventing violence, but act on it.
"A lot of people have strong beliefs about what needs to happen but are afraid of being the target if they act," Fullington said. "We just need more people to stick together, there are more people on the right side than the bad side of things."
He hopes once the community comes together, people won't need to worry about violence at these events.
13News did reach out to the mayor's office for comment on this shooting but he was unavailable Monday for an interview.
