INDIANAPOLIS — A Lawrence man was sentenced to 63 years in prison for the deadly 2020 shooting of another man on Indianapolis' near northeast side.
Keith Cole was convicted by a jury after a three-day trial in March for the death of Daniel Baxter, who was fatally shot while sitting at a stoplight at East 30th Street and North Keystone Avenue on Oct. 8, 2020.
The evening of the shooting, an IMPD lieutenant saw Baxter's car crash near the intersection. Baxter was found inside unresponsive with gunshot wounds.
Witnesses at the scene gave police a description of the suspect's car and the gun used. Video showed Baxter in his car at the light when a Black Dodge Charger pulled up behind him. A man, later identified as Cole, exited and approached Baxter's car before firing five shots at him.
Investigators used FLOCK cameras to identify and track down the car Cole had been in. Security video from Baxter's apartment complex showed the car Cole was in had followed Baxter's car as it left the complex, just minutes before the shooting.
Investigators found a gun wrapped in a plastic bag in a garbage can at Cole's home, and investigators tied it to a bullet at the crime scene.
