LAFAYETTE, Ind. — An 18-year-old wanted man is facing charges after police allegedly saw him assault a female victim Monday afternoon.

On Oct. 28 at 3 p.m., the Lafayette Police Department said detectives arrived in the 800 block of South 20th Street, near South 18th Street, searching for Demetrious Norwood, of Lafayette, who they had probably cause to arrest on charges of criminal recklessness with a gun in connection to a shooting on Sept. 30.

Detectives allegedly saw Norwood actively assault a female victim. Detectives said they learned the victim had an "active protective order" against Norwood, prompting them to intervene to prevent further harm.

When police approached Norwood, he allegedly took the victim's phone and ran from officers while armed with a gun. Police said they chased Norwood on foot, when he tried to discard his gun. He was eventually taken into custody, and the gun was recovered.

Norwood now faces a charge for domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury. He faces preliminary charges for protection order violation, robbery with a firearm, unlawful carrying of a firearm and criminal recklessness with a firearm related to the Sept. 30 shooting.

"This arrest exemplifies the Lafayette Police Department’s commitment to addressing violent crime through decisive action and thorough investigative work," said Sgt. Shawn Verma, administrative services for the Lafayette Police Department. "The quick response by the Violent Crimes Unit and Officers ensured the safety of a vulnerable individual and successfully brought a violent suspect into custody, removing an illegal firearm from our streets."
