TIPPECANOE COUNTY, Ind. — Police in Tippecanoe County arrested a 27-year-old man after he allegedly led police on a multi-county chase before barricading himself inside a home.
According to a release from the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department, shortly after 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, officers were dispatched to an alleged domestic incident that took place inside a car in the town of Linden in Montgomery County.
Officers were told that a man was allegedly beating a woman inside a black Nissan Pathfinder. The man, identified as 27-year-old Tristan Sammons, had a warrant out for his arrest for felony theft in Lafayette.
Around 30 minutes after officers were initially dispatched to the incident, a deputy with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Office saw a black Nissan Pathfinder matching the description traveling eastbound on State Road 28, near the U.S. Highway 231 intersection in the town of Romney.
After running the plates on the Pathfinder and confirming the vehicle belonged to Sammons, the deputy tried to pull over the Pathfinder. Police said that is when Sammons began to flee.
Sammons allegedly drove south on County Road 300 East as police chased after him. According to police, once he reached the Tippecanoe-Montgomery County line, Sammons allegedly drove his car off the road and continued to try to evade police by driving through non-planted farm fields.
Police continued to chase Sammons through the fields before rejoining the road on County Road East 1100 North in Montgomery County. The chase continued into Linden before Sammons crashed into a tree near the 200 block of High Street, near U.S. 231 and South Street.
According to police, after crashing into the tree, Sammons tried to run from officers. Witnesses told police they saw Sammons enter a home in the 100 block of Water Street. Police at the scene called for backup and was assisted by Indiana State Police troopers and the Montgomery County sheriff's deputies.
Police said a perimeter was set up around the home and an uninvolved man and woman then left the house and told police Sammons had hidden himself inside the crawlspace. According to police, Sammons knew the couple and had been staying with them in the house.
Attempts by police to communicate with Sammons were ignored, leading police and a K-9 unit to breach the home. Deputies located Sammons under the home and took him into custody without incident. The crashed Pathfinder was towed to a local lot in Montgomery County, according to police.
Sammons was taken and booked at the Tippecanoe County Jail and is facing preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle and driving while suspended with a prior.
