KOKOMO, Ind. — A Kokomo Police Department probationary officer was fired for "multiple policy violations" and then charged with sexual misconduct with a minor, sexual battery and child seduction.
Police said Kokomo Police Chief Douglas Stout was contacted by another law enforcement agency on July 1, 2024, in relation to a criminal allegation involving 31-year-old Sinme I. Asomuyide, of Indianapolis.
According to court documents, a man in Illinois contacted police to report sexual abuse involving a girl and a Kokomo police officer.
Court documents say the incidents happened when girl went to Kokomo to try to reunite with her biological father.
Indiana State Police detectives took over the investigation and spoke with the girl, who allegedly admitted to being on a "running away streak" lately.
According to court documents, the girl told detectives that it always seemed to be the same officer who picked her up. That officer was later identified as Asomuyide.
Court documents say the girl told detectives about multiple instances with Asomuyide, including the following allegations:
- Asomuyide asked the girl if she was sexually active and then followed that by asking what's the age of the oldest man she has been with. She said she responded with, "I don't mess with adults like that," and he allegedly replied, "It would never hurt to try."
- Later that same day, she believes Asomuyide somehow pinged her phone to figure out where she was and pick her up from one of her father's friend's sister's house. She told detectives that Asomuyide then drove her to an abandoned parking lot, took off her handcuffs and made her get in the front seat of the car. She said Asomuyide started touching her inappropriately and made her touch him as well. On the drive back to the house, she told detectives that Asomuyide told her, "If you tell anyone what happened, it's gonna be on you."
Investigators said Asomuyide had "multiple policy violations" and was ultimately fired based on those policy violations alone.
According to court documents, Asomuyide deactivated his body-worn camera when he was dropping the girl off at a youth center.
Court documents say Asomuyide was supposed to end his shift at 10 p.m. that same day but requested two hours of overtime to do paperwork for a drunk driving crash he worked earlier in his shift.
Reviewing the paperwork, investigators determined the crash happened much earlier during Asomuyide's shift, and he shouldn't have needed that time to do paperwork.
Investigators also said Asomuyide's police car was not at the station – where he should have been doing paperwork – from 9:30 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. GPS locations instead found his car driving around the northeast side of downtown Kokomo.
According to court documents, detectives then spoke with Asomuyide, who denied any inappropriate contact with the girl.
Asomuyide also allegedly told detectives that he did not communicate with dispatchers or any other officers during the incidents.
Detectives arrested Asomuyide on Monday, July 22.
The Howard County Prosecutor's Office filed charges against Asomuyide for sexual misconduct with a minor, sexual battery, child seduction and official misconduct.
