INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was convicted Wednesday for the murder of one woman and attempted murder of another woman in 2021 on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

A jury found Marcus Minor guilty of murder in the shooting death of 51-year-old Melissa Smith at a home in the 3900 block of North Pasadena Street, near 42nd Street and Shadeland Avenue, on Jan. 12, 2021. A second woman was critically wounded in the shooting but was able to call 911 to alert police.

A third victim, 23-year-old Austin Smith, was also killed in the shooting, though the jury found Minor not guilty of murder in his death.

Police said the 2-year-old child of the woman who was wounded was found unharmed at the scene, on the bed next to the victims. The woman told investigators she and her child arrived at the home to find Minor and Smith arguing. She said she pleaded with Minor not to hurt anyone, but he then shot the women.

At the time of the shooting, a police officer said it was one of the worst scenes he'd ever seen, considering a child was present.

Minor's trial lasted three days. He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 1, 2023.
