INDIANAPOLIS — A jury convicted an Indianapolis man Wednesday night for a 2022 road rage shooting on Interstate 70 on the east side of Indianapolis.

Dion Kimbrough was found guilty of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon after a three-day jury trial.

The shooting happened July 18, 2022 on I-70 near Post Road. Eli Hickerson, 30, of Carthage, Indiana, was shot while in the passenger seat of a car. Hickerson was driven to a medical facility near I-70 and Mt. Comfort Road in Hancock County, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of that car told police, the prosecutor's office said, that he saw a box truck driving erratically on Interstate 465, and as he exited onto I-70, he saw the truck following. As it approached, the driver fired multiple shots.

Investigators determined the truck belonged to a concrete construction company in Indianapolis, and Kimbrough was driving at the time.

Police said Kimbrough was wearing a GPS monitoring device on his ankle at the time of the shooting. He was supposed to be on home detention when the shooting occurred, according to prosecutor's office.

The Probation Department determined Kimbrough traveled to an Indianapolis home after the shooting, and police found a gun and shell casings "consistent with those found at the scene," the prosecutor's office said.

Kimbrough had served a little more than three years in prison for conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

“Last night, a Marion County jury took a stand against the road rage violence that we continue to see more frequently on our roadways," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said in a statement. "It should serve as a reminder not to act impulsively but to address conflicts safely with a clear and level head.”

Kimbrough's sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 13, 2024.
