INDIANAPOLIS — A former corrections officer is now facing jail time after being convicted of multiple charges relating to sexual abuse he committed while he was working at the Indiana Women’s Prison.
Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said a jury convicted Gbenga Afolabi, of Avon, of two counts of rape, one count of attempted rape, five counts of sexual misconduct, three counts of official misconduct and two counts of Intimidation.
After the guilty verdict, Afolabi was taken into custody.
In July 2021, investigators were alerted to Afolabi's inappropriate sexual relations with inmates who were under his supervision at the Indiana Woman’s Prison.
During the investigation, four victims came forward, revealing that Afolabi used his position to threaten them if they did not comply or report his actions.
“The defendant preyed on the vulnerable and took advantage of his position of power to abuse those who were there to rehabilitate themselves, not be victimized,” Mears. said “The defendant will now face the consequences for his colossal violation of trust,” Mears added.
Afolabi will be sentenced on Nov. 18.
