INDIANAPOLIS — A judge has imposed a 13-year prison sentence for a man who pleaded guilty to an aggravated battery charge.

Thomas Major Jr. received a sentence of 13 years in prison, plus three years probation Thursday, May 23 as part of a plea agreement. An attempted murder charge that had been filed in the case was dismissed.

IMPD arrested Major for his alleged role in the death of man who died in September 2022, roughly three months after he was shot on Indianapolis' east side, IMPD said.

The shooting happened just after midnight on Monday, June 27, 2022. Police were called to the 1400 block of North Gladstone Avenue, near the intersection of 16th Street and North Sherman Drive.

Officers arrived to find 28-year-old Gregory Ware with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition and was released more than two months later. However, IMPD said Ware died due to complications from his injuries on Sept. 4, 2022.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office charged Majors with attempted murder in July 2022. On Oct. 28, the coroner's office ruled Ware's death a homicide.
