'It's terrifying' | Residents on edge after armed car burglars hit Indianapolis neighborhood

"All of a sudden you see the gun and it hits a different nerve," one victim said.

INDIANAPOLIS — Several people living in a neighborhood near Michigan Road and Kessler Boulevard say they were surprised to walk out their doors on Labor Day morning to find their cars had been broken into.

"The things that they took, even though they are materialistic, they are still your things," said Patrick Williams. "With that, a lot of sentimental items were lost and I can never get back. Not only do you feel violated, it just kind of puts that fear in you."

When some of the residents checked their cameras, they were even more surprised to see at least one person carrying a gun.

"It's something you never think of. You see those videos on social media of people getting caught on Ring camera and it's just someone doing something dumb. You looked at that at first, then all of a sudden you see the gun and it hits a different nerve. It's terrifying," Williams said.

And Williams said that wasn't the only scary part.

"One of the neighbor's garage door was open, and those two individuals armed with an actual handgun crossed that threshold and entered their privacy. From talking to them, it kind of shakes the community," said Williams.

The experience has neighbors concerned.

"If I would have woken up and gone out there, would I still be standing here? I think that's what kind of hits the community, talking to different people. If they would have confronted this individual, what if? I could have lost multiple neighbors in a peaceful neighborhood because someone's making a bad decision," Williams said.

It's a situation Williams hopes other neighbors won't have to deal with.

"Keep an eye on your stuff," he said. "Make sure your cars are locked every night. It's one of those things you just get so comfortable and think it would never happen to you."

IMPD says they're looking into the burglaries.

Williams said they're planning to look into getting a neighborhood crime watch set up on their street.
