ISP: Man throwing knives toward officers killed in Grant County police shooting

The incident started Wednesday evening around 7:40 p.m. in the area of Howard and Washington streets in the community of Sims.

SWAYZEE, Ind. — Police in Grant County are investigating after a man was killed in a police shooting Wednesday evening in the community of Sims.

An Indiana State Police spokesperson said their department launched an investigation into the incident at the request of the Grant County sheriff.

According to the spokesperson, a preliminary investigation revealed the incident started around 7:40 p.m. Nov. 1 when dispatchers received reports of a man with a pellet gun threatening to shoot a car in the area of Howard and Washington streets in Sims. Sheriff's deputies and the Swayzee Police Department responded.

When a Swayzee officer arrived, the spokesperson said he found a person, later identified as 27-year-old Brandon T. Decker, of Sims, "holding what appeared to be a rifle."

Decker dropped the gun, and officers attempted to take him into custody when Decker allegedly pulled out a knife, and after a deputy used his taser, Decker "began throwing (knives) in the direction of officers, resulting in the Grant County deputy discharging their department-issued handgun," ISP said.

Decker was pronounced dead from his injuries, according to the spokesperson. No one else was injured.

The deputy involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation, which is part of the department's operating procedures.

Results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Grant County Prosecutor's Office to be reviewed, according to ISP.

Sims is roughly 65 miles north of downtown Indianapolis.
