PENDLETON, Ind. — An inmate at the Indiana Department of Correction facility in Pendleton is facing attempted murder and other charges after an attack on an officer Oct. 6, 2023.
According to court documents, inmate James Phillips attacked the officer with a knife-like weapon on the second floor of a cell block.
The officer tried to radio for help, but was not able to as the Phillips began trying to stab him.
Another officer was able to tackle Phillips and put him in a chokehold.
The officer suffered a number of wounds to his nose, forehead, and neck. The officer was transported by a medical helicopter to an Indianapolis hospital for treatment of the "non-life-threatening injuries."
