INDIANAPOLIS — Photos from a home security camera caught the moment Andrew Barton's 16-year-old daughter was hit by an alleged drunk driver while she was getting groceries out of the back of a parked car on the east side of Indianapolis Saturday night.
It happened around 9 p.m. on July 20 in the 4800 block of Brookville Road, near Emerson and English avenues.
"She was laying on the ground, arm very clearly broken, pale, lips turning blue, going into shock just after getting hit by a car who decided not to stop and kept going," Barton said.
According to court documents, Barton's daughter was hit so hard, it damaged the truck she was next to.
"The vehicles, I can replace those. I can't replace my kid. I just truly wish people would slow the (expletive) down and pay attention because we got lucky and her arm just got broken and she just had to have surgery, but that could have been her life," Barton said.
Police said the man driving the SUV had a blood alcohol content of .219, which is nearly three times more than Indiana's legal limit for driving. According to court documents, the man also had kids in the SUV at the time of the incident and lives just down the street from the Bartons.
13News reporter Chase Houle was able to locate the SUV. It had a missing passenger side window, a scuff on the bumper and a sticker on the back of it that said, "Back off!!! Or I'll deploy your airbags!!!"
Barton hopes much-needed change comes to his street to slow drivers down.
"Speed bumps, minimum. Maybe another stop sign thrown in at the four-way up there. Cars treat it like a drag strip or cut-through or something, but they just come flying through here," Barton said.
Police arrested Monty Mulroney, of Indianapolis, and prosecutors charged him with leaving the scene of an accident, causing serious bodily injury when operating a vehicle while intoxicated, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and neglect of a dependent.
Mulroney's initial hearing is scheduled for Thursday, July 25.
Indy Pedestrian Safety Crisis posted to X that the group recorded 23 hit-and-runs in a single week. That's the highest number they've seen in such a short amount of time.
According to the group, 16 of the hit-and-runs involved pedestrians, while the other seven were bicyclists.
