COLUMBUS, Ind. — An Indianapolis man was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without parole for the murder of his girlfriend last year.
Anthony Carter reportedly called 911 in the early morning hours of April 16, 2023, telling a dispatcher he had killed his girlfriend, Ashley Neville, in Bartholomew County. Deputies responded to an address given by the caller, where Neville was believed to live.
After not being able to contact anyone inside the home, someone reported a suspicious man in the area to police. Officers later found Carter hiding in a wooded area near Neville's home.
A no-contact order was found to be in place, preventing Carter from contacting Neville.
Once in police custody, Carter reportedly confessed to shooting then asphyxiating Neville before hiding her body in a bedroom of her home.
A jury found him guilty of murder on Oct. 28, 2024, after a six-day trial. The jury then deliberated for 45 minutes before agreeing to the life sentence.
Court records show Carter, 51, was formally sentenced on Dec. 11.
