INDIANAPOLIS — A judge sentenced an Indianapolis man for a 2022 deadly road rage shooting on Interstate 70 on the east side of Indianapolis.
Dion Kimbrough was sentenced to 60 years after a jury found him guilty of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
The shooting happened July 18, 2022 on I-70 near Post Road. Eli Hickerson, 30, of Carthage, Indiana, was shot while in the passenger seat of a car. Hickerson was driven to a medical facility near I-70 and Mt. Comfort Road in Hancock County, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of that car told police that he saw a box truck driving erratically on Interstate 465, and as he exited onto I-70, he saw the truck following. As it approached, the driver fired multiple shots.
Investigators determined the truck belonged to a concrete construction company in Indianapolis, and Kimbrough was driving at the time.
Police said Kimbrough was wearing a GPS monitoring device on his ankle at the time of the shooting. He was supposed to be on home detention when the shooting occurred, according to prosecutor's office.
The Probation Department determined Kimbrough traveled to an Indianapolis home after the shooting, and police found a gun and shell casings "consistent with those found at the scene," the prosecutor's office said.
Kimbrough had served a little more than three years in prison for conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
"Mr. Hickerson tragically lost his life due to an unacceptable act of road rage violence on his commute home from work," Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said. "At today’s hearing, many people who loved him described a loving and good friend. This sentence is a testament to law enforcement’s commitment to holding those accountable who resort to acts of violence on our roadways."
