INDIANAPOLIS — A 67-year-old man from Indianapolis has been convicted on several charges, including rape and kidnapping, connected to an incident in March 2023 on the city's east side.
A jury found Roy Robinson guilty on the following 10 charges:
- Three counts of rape
- Two counts of kidnapping
- Two counts of criminal confinement
- Two counts of resisting law enforcement
- One count of operating as a habitual traffic violator
On March 13, 2023, IMPD officers responded to a report of a rape in the area of East 16th Street and Dequincy streets, near Emerson Avenue.
According to court documents, a woman said a man, later identified as Robinson, got out of a car near a bus stop and showed her a handgun and told her to get in the car.
The woman told police Robinson drove her to Brookside Park and sexually assaulted her.
Police responded to the scene and saw the suspect car leaving the area. According to court documents, Robinson refused to stop and led police on a chase. The chase ended when Robinson crashed his car into a railroad crossing light and a van near East 16th Street and Sherman Drive.
Detectives got for a search warrant for Robinson's car, where they found a handgun under the passenger seat — but the handgun turned out to be a fake plastic gun. Detectives also found a loaded 9mm magazine, star-shaped security officer badge and a backpack containing sex toys.
The Marion County Prosecutor's Office said Robinson will have the habitual sentencing enhancement trial phase before he is sentenced. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.
