INDIANAPOLIS — Neighbors on Kappes Street stood on the street in disbelief as police investigated a deadly shooting Monday night.
"It kills me. It kills me. I lost a good friend. I lost two good friends. One is probably going to prison for the rest of his life and the other is going to be buried in the ground," said Anthony Montgomery, who witnessed the shooting.
Montgomery said Dustin Soubeih and a friend of theirs got into an argument. When Montgomery said he got Soubeih to cool off a little bit, things took a dramatic turn.
"Next thing I heard, a gunshot rang out. I looked up, he was shot in the neck, and I didn't know what to do. I panicked and I told people to call 911," said Montgomery.
IMPD said information led them to believe the man who allegedly shot Soubeih was in a neighboring duplex. After hours of SWAT being on scene and searching the home, police say he was nowhere in sight.
"Obviously, we have to do everything that we can as an agency, that's number one, in making sure the community is safe and our officer's safety is there. Sometimes we do have to gather search warrants to enter the home. So, our agency is practicing slowing things down in order to give suspects an opportunity to surrender," said IMPD Ofc. William Young.
Police say they found the suspected gunman 2 1/2 miles away on North Traub Avenue early Tuesday morning.
While police may have found the person responsible, Montgomery hopes lawmakers can find a solution to all the gun violence.
"They need to put some type of law on these handguns and all this carrying around. It's nonsense man. They need to stop this. They need to do something because what they're going to keep doing is death after death after death. And that's what's going to happen and the government ain't seeing it," Montgomery pleaded.
The suspect in the case faces a preliminary charge of murder.
