INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man who hit an IMPD officer in the head with a sock full of glass was sentenced to prison on Wednesday.
Jonathan Rhinehart was sentenced to 545 days (18 months) in prison with 245 days being suspended after accepting a plea agreement and pleading guilty to felony battery against a public safety official.
According to court documents, around 6:15 a.m. on June 3, two IMPD officers responded to a complaint from Rhinehart regarding a suspicious vehicle in the 600 block of North Illinois Street, near West North Street.
Court documents said one officer asked Rhinehart for his identification to begin a report. The officer also told Rhinehart that his shopping cart filled with personal belongings was on private property and had to be moved.
That's when Rhinehart pulled out a sock full of broken glass and used it to hit the officer on his neck.
The officer felt immediate burning in his neck and immediately placed Rhinehart in handcuffs, according to court documents.
Rhinehart reportedly told police he struck the officer because the officer was "taking too long to complete the report."
