Indianapolis man sentenced for attempted murder of 2 IMPD officers in 2021

Deonta Williams pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon as a prisoner.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was sentenced Thursday after he attempted to kill two IMPD officers by stabbing them in December 2021.

Deonta Williams will spend the next 66 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder and one count of possession of a deadly weapon by a prisoner. Williams accepted a plea deal earlier in July.

In court documents released around the time of the incident, on Dec. 1, 2021, Williams placed a false 911 call claiming to have been harassed by someone. Two officers arrived and investigated the location of the reported harassment. That's when Williams attacked them both.

During the attack, one officer was stabbed in the chest, and the other had his neck slashed, with the wound hitting his jugular.

Williams allegedly told investigators he was going to kill an officer because he felt the city owed him after he received a large medical bill he could not pay.

Court documents said he also told detectives that he didn't want to kill a lot of officers, just one. Williams allegedly said that if he could kill one of the officers, he would take their gun, forcing the other officer to shoot him. He said that would give him justice.

Williams was shot multiple times by the officers after they said they ordered him to drop the knives and he refused.

“The officers were simply answering the call to help someone in need when they were horrifically attacked,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said. “Thanks to their brave response, the defendant was quickly subdued and unable to harm anyone else. We are pleased to have achieved justice on behalf of the officers.”
