HANCOCK COUNTY, Ind. — An Indianapolis man was arrested for his alleged role in a road rage shooting along Interstate 70 in Hancock County Wednesday afternoon.

Around 2:15 p.m. July 3, police received a report of shots fired from a moving vehicle at a semi tractor-trailer on I-70 near the 101-mile marker, a few miles west of the Greenfield exit.

Indiana State Police troopers spotted the suspect car west of Mt. Comfort Road and pulled it over, taking the driver into custody and locating a gun in the car.

A detective met with the driver of the semi, who was not injured, and found apparent gunshot holes in the passenger side of the semi.

In a release, an ISP spokesperson said investigators believe a "road rage encounter" led to the shooting. The 22-year-old suspect who had been pulled over was arrested and taken to the Hancock County Jail.

(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects in cases until formal charges are filed by prosecutors.)

Formal charges had not yet been filed as of Thursday morning.

State police said the incident is the 40th of gunfire on Indianapolis-area interstates so far in 2024. ISP investigated 55 interstate shootings in its Indianapolis district in 2023.

"Anyone who witnesses any type of road rage, or becomes involved, is encouraged to call 911 immediately, information provided by witnesses is inherently valuable in these investigations," an ISP spokesperson said in a statement.
