Indianapolis man arrested during investigation into 2018 deadly shooting on far east side

Genesis Penn, 30, was charged with murder in August 2022 in the death of Christopher Buckhalter nearly four years prior.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man was arrested Tuesday, nearly 18 months after he was charged with murder in the 2018 deadly shooting of another man on the city's far east side.

Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, IMPD officers responded to the intersection of Pineneedle Court and Aristocrat Lane, near 42nd Street and North Mitthoefer Road, for a report of a crash with injury.

Officers learned the male driver of the car, 23-year-old Christopher Buckhalter, had run from the scene, and he was found nearby in a parking lot in the 10200 block of Tinton Court with an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

During their investigation, homicide detectives identified Genesis Penn, now 30, as a suspect in the case. On Aug. 5, 2022, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office formally charged Penn with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

IMPD said Penn had been in federal custody since 2021 on unrelated charges prior to being returned to Marion County on Jan. 30, 2024, and arrested in the case.

Online court records indicate Penn has an initial hearing scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2.
