INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis man has been sentenced to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty to counterfeiting.
Jacob Seyfried, 47, was arrested on Nov. 13, 2021 after officers pulled him over while he was driving a Cadillac with a stolen license plate.
According to court documents, Seyfried told officers he had been released from jail just six days before the Nov. 2021 traffic stop. He told officers he had been staying at a nearby hotel and had borrowed the Cadillac to do some shopping at Kohl's.
An officer with the Carmel Police Department searched the Cadillac and discovered an off-color $100 bill, several discarded receipts, a paper shredder in the trunk, and a Kohl's shopping bag containing a coat and backpack.
When officers searched Seyfried, they claim to have discovered a crumpled wad of $50 bills that turned out to be counterfeit. In total, officers found $300 worth of counterfeit bills during the search.
Officers then discovered Seyfried had used one of the counterfeit $50 bills at the Kohl's he had just left.
Police searched Seyfried's hotel room and found numerous supplies used for making counterfeit currency. Also discovered during the search was eight pages of printed, counterfeit $100 bills and four pages of printed counterfeit $50 bills.
Court documents showed Seyfried had a lengthy criminal history. He had previous convictions for forgery, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and a federal conviction for mail fraud. Seyfried was also found to have had a fake title for a stolen $50,000 Dodge Charger while on pretrial release.
Upon completion of his prison sentence, Seyfriend will serve three years probation.
