Indianapolis hit-and-run murder suspect was on probation for battery at time of incident

Investigators said Donnyha Tyler ran over a man and left him for dead.

INDIANAPOLIS — The person police say is responsible for killing Tommy Brock Jr. is locked up in Marion County Jail.

Investigators said 25-year-old Donnyha Tyler ran him over with an SUV and left him for dead on Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive, near State Avenue, in Indianapolis in mid-October.

"So, from what I know and heard, basically the girlfriend and her had an altercation, she got in the car to run the girlfriend over, and the girlfriend hid behind a tree, and then she ran my brother over," said Brock's sister, Jaliyah Boyd.

Brock's family said he and Tyler were friends.

"You couldn't have a heart to run over anyone, whether you knew them or not. Why wouldn't you stop? Why wouldn't you try to help them?" said Brock's mother, Glenda Bean.

According to court documents, Brock had tried to pay Tyler money his girlfriend owed Tyler for drugs. The girlfriend had gotten clean and that's why Brock was bringing the money. The court documents allege Tyler wanted Brock's girlfriend to pay her directly, so she went to confront her.

Witnesses allegedly told investigators Tyler yelled at the girlfriend and pointed a gun at her. Tyler then went to drive away, but turned around and drove at Brock's girlfriend, according to court documents. Brock's girlfriend allegedly told police she was able to jump out of the way, but Brock – who was just arriving on his bike – was hit and got caught under the car.

Tuesday, 13News looked into Tyler's background. According to court documents, Tyler was on probation at the time of this alleged incident.

This comes after she pleaded guilty to domestic battery in front of a child in March. In the paperwork, the alleged victim said when he was asleep, he woke up to Tyler hitting him in the face and head, giving him a bloody lip and a headache.

Investigators said Tyler's 5-year-old daughter was sleeping just a feet away.

"You're already in trouble, and you make more trouble for yourself. I'm just glad justice is going to be served," Bean said.

But Bean said justice won't bring her son back.

"It helps me start the grieving process. Not closure, but working towards closure," Bean said.

The family said they have not been able to bury Brock yet due to his unexpected death and funeral costs. His sister said they have filled out a victim's compensation application in hopes of receiving money to lay her brother to rest.
