MUNCIE, Ind. — Indiana State Police said a pursuit suspect is in custody after they were disarmed and apprehended by a K-9 officer.

According to ISP, around 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, Sergeant Nick Albrecht was on patrol on South Madison Street near Memorial Drive in Muncie.

Sgt. Albrecht spotted a back Chevrolet Camaro and attempted to initiate a traffic stop for an equipment violation. That's when the Camaro sped away from Sgt. Albrecht and a chase was initiated.

After calling for backup, Trooper Michael Thiron and his K-9 partner Yana arrived to assist Sgt. Albrecht.

As the chase continued, the suspect drove through residential yards in an attempt to escape the pursuing officers. The suspect's car eventually became stuck in softened ground, leading the suspect to run from officers.

During the foot pursuit, the suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at Yana. That's when the K-9 officer knocked the weapon out of the suspect's hand and tackled them to the ground.

The suspect allegedly stood up and tried to run away after initially being knocked to the ground by Yana. However, that's when Yana re-engaged the suspect by knocking him down a second time and held them down until the suspect was apprehended by police.

The suspect, later identified as a 31-year-old man from Muncie, was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital before being transported to the Delaware County Jail. He is being held on preliminary felony charges of resisting law enforcement by causing an injury and resisting law enforcement with a vehicle. He is also preliminarily charged with multiple misdemeanors, including operating a vehicle while impaired causing endangerment, possession of marijuana, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without ever receiving a license, and failure to identify.
