CONNERSVILLE, Ind. — Indiana State Police is investigating after a domestic violence suspect was shot by police near Connersville Wednesday night.

Shortly after 10 p.m. April 3, the Connersville Police Department and Fayette County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home in the 200 block of South Gabbard Road, west of Connersville.

Officers learned a female exited the house before they arrived, and the suspect, a 42-year-old Connersville man, was still inside. Officers requested the man surrender peacefully in a phone call but he refused, state police said.

(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects in cases until formal charges are filed by prosecutors.)

A SWAT team used a loudspeaker to attempt to communicate with the man once he stopped talking over the phone.

"At some point during the encounter," ISP said, the man reportedly approached the front door of the home carrying a rifle, and after police ordered him to drop it, he "raised the firearm at officers in a threatening manner."

A SWAT team member deployed gas into the home, and the man "reportedly fired rounds at police which caused them to use lethal force to defend themselves," an ISP spokesperson said in a statement.

Police lost sight of the man during an exchange of gunfire. He then returned to the door with the rifle, and police fired at him, striking him at least once.

The man went back into the home, and a drone was used to locate him inside. The man was taken to Reid Health in Connersville before being transferred to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. State police said his condition was not known as of 7 a.m. Thursday.

No officers were injured.

Officers were wearing body cameras, and the names of the officers involved are not being released at this point, police said.
