RICHMOND, Ind. — A man was sentenced to 85 years in prison for a deadly shooting in 2021 over a driveway dispute.
Last month, Elick Allen, of Richmond, was convicted of the murder of 46-year-old John Day and the attempted murder of Day's 72-year-old mother, Brenda, at their home.
Officers responded to the 1400 block of New Paris Pike, near Middleboro Pike, on May 13, 2021, to investigate a possible shooting. Once there, police found two people shot.
Authorities said John died at the scene, and medics transported Brenda to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. She ended up surviving.
Police said an ongoing dispute over a driveway led to a fight and then the shooting.
“The hard work and dedication of Detective Tom Legear were crucial in bringing this case to a successful resolution. Closing cases like this sends a firm message that crime will be solved and offenders will be held accountable," Richmond Police Chief Kyle Weatherly said. "The Richmond Police Department stands united with the citizens of Richmond in our commitment to eradicate crime and build a safer, stronger community.”
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Day family during this difficult time," Richmond Police said in a post on Facebook. "We hope this sentencing brings some measure of comfort and closure."
