IMPD updates events leading up to deadly shooting of officer including rescue effort

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — IMPD is providing details on the events leading up to the deadly shooting of Officer Breann Leath.

On April 9, 2020, at approximately 2:46pm, someone involved in domestic disturbance at 1800 block of Edinburge Square called 9-1-1. The disturbance involved a boyfriend and girlfriend.

Four officers, including Officer Breann Leath, were dispatched.

Shortly after arriving, officers called out “shot fired” and an “officer down” on the radio.

The officers had not yet made contact with the people inside the apartment when the shooting happened. Officers then backed out of the hallway, but were not able to bring Officer Leath with them.

A Sergeant and a team of officers then reentered the apartment building and pulled Officer Leath out. While doing that they found another female victim in the hallway suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect, 27-year-old Elliahs Dorsey, was still allegedly armed and inside the apartment.

Indianapolis EMS transported Officer Leath to Eskenazi Hospital where she died. The second female victim was taken to Methodist Hospital and is in stable condition.

No shots were fired by officers during the incident.

Dorsey was later arrested for murder and attempted murder.
