IMPD: 2 officers injured when suspect rams into police cars on northeast side

The incident happened early Saturday, Nov. 18, near 75th Street and Shadeland Avenue.

INDIANAPOLIS — An investigation is underway after two IMPD officers were injured when a suspect hit multiple police cars early Saturday on Indianapolis' northeast side.

Shortly after midnight Nov. 18, officers with the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force in the area responded to a report of a disturbance in the 7500 block of Shadeland Avenue, near 75th Street.

The officers saw a 37-year-old man with a gun walking around, who then put the gun in the front seat of a car and later returned to the car. An IMPD spokesperson said officers feared the man was going to get the gun and shoot someone.

As the officers moved in, the man rammed three police cars: an IMPD car, an Indiana State Police car and an undercover police vehicle.

One IMPD officer likely suffered broken ribs and was "stable" when taken to a local hospital, police said. Another IMPD officer suffered minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital. An ISP trooper involved was not injured.

The man was taken into custody and arrested. Police said the suspect has a lengthy criminal history, and had six active warrants at the time of the incident, including for being a serious violent felon in possession of a gun.

A man who said he was working at a bar and grill near East 75th Street and Shadeland Avenue told 13News he saw the suspect in a disagreement with a bartender before security had him leave.

The man said he saw the suspect with a gun outside the bar and that he feared the suspect may start shooting. He told 13News he saw the suspect back his white SUV into one car before driving forward into two police cars.
