IMPD: Person suspected of firing shot at police is in custody

Police asked people to avoid the area of 21st Street and Emerson Avenue while they searched for the suspect.

INDIANAPOLIS — A person suspected of firing a gunshot at Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers and throwing fireworks at them is in custody after an hourslong standoff on the east side.

Police say SWAT officers found the person inside a home with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Medics took the suspect to a hospital in critical condition.

Police tell us it started nearly five hours earlier, around 3:30 Thursday afternoon. Investigators were searching for a person wanted on warrants and in connection with a firearms case.

Police say after they approached the person, the person ran off with a gun in their hand. At some point during the chase, police say an officer heard a gunshot. Eventually, police say the suspect barricaded himself inside a home and ignored commands to come out.

During one attempt to make contact police say the person set fireworks off inside the home.

Police believe the suspect has ties to that house.

No officers were hurt and no officers fired their weapon.

MPD's Critical Incident Response Team is now leading the investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317.262.8477 (TIPS).
