INDIANAPOLIS — Sunday was a very busy night for IMPD as two men were shot within minutes of each other.
Shortly after 6:30 p.m. Dec 17, police responded to a report of a person shot in the 5300 block of Butler Terrace, near East 34th Street and Emerson Avenue on the city's east side.
When they got to the scene, officers said they heard a call for help from inside an apartment and forced open the door.
IMPD Capt. Don Weilhammer told 13News that officers found a man who had been shot.
The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died.
The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 23-year-old Leonard Eugene Germany III.
While at the apartment complex, police said they struggled to find any witnesses or anyone willing to talk about what happened.
"It's extremely frustrating with the amount of people that are out here, we know somebody saw something and somebody knows something. It makes it extremely hard to solve the crime if we don't have people giving us an idea what actually occurred," Weilhammer said.
Less than an hour later, police responded to another person shot. This time, in the 900 block of Warren Avenue, near South Harding and West Morris streets on the city's near west side.
Weilhammer told 13News that officers found a man who had been shot. According to Weilhammer, medics took the man to Eskenazi Hospital "in very critical condition."
Police confirmed officers detained the person believed to be responsible for the shooting.
Monday morning, police confirmed they arrested a 22-year-old man on preliminary charges of aggravated battery, battery with a deadly weapon and burglary.
(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects until charges have been filed by prosecutors.)
"There's no threat to the neighborhood, and this was a targeted situation," Weilhammer said.
As we approach another year, officers hope people will start making better choices.
"Violence is not the answer. If you're having problems, try and talk it out. If you can't talk it out, turn and walk away," Weilhammer said.
Anyone with information on either shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
