INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD has released edited bodycam footage of a fatal police shooting that happened on the east side of Indianapolis in October.
According to IMPD, officers were initially called to the 1000 block of North Kealing Avenue, near 10th Street and North Sherman Drive, around 3:30 p.m. Oct. 27 on a report of a theft.
While officers were investigating the theft report, an uninvolved car approached officers and came to a sudden stop. A woman got out of the vehicle and told officers that she was being held at gunpoint by a man she did not know, later identified as 25-year-old Julius Hill.
WARNING: The critical incident video contains graphic video and language. Those wishing to view it can find it here.
Bodycam video shows the woman talking to officers about what happened. As officers walked up to the car to confront the man, bodycam video shows the officers running from the car.
Then, bodycam video shows an officer duck and get behind the car. When the officer sees Hill point a gun toward other officers and not complying to verbal commands of putting his hands up, the officer fires his weapon twice.
The officer shot Hill at least once before using a Taser and ordering the suspect to drop their weapon. IMPD said another office removed the gun from Hill's hand.
Officers provided medical assistance to Hill until medics arrived and took him to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.
While he was in the hospital, prosecutors charged Hill with kidnapping, armed robbery and pointing a firearm.
Hill died from his injuries Nov. 14.
During their investigation, detectives learned the female victim was driving northbound on North Kealing Avenue when she saw officers near East 11th Street. According to the victim, Hill jumped into her car and told her to drive while threatening her with a gun. She then drove to where she had seen the officers earlier and called for help.
Neither the victim or the victim's dog, which was in the car, were injured in the incident.
The IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct the criminal investigation.
IMPD Internal Affairs is conducting a separate administrative investigation.
The civilian-majority Use of Force Review Board will conduct a mandatory hearing for any attempted use of deadly force against a person. This occurs after the conclusion of the criminal process.
