INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD said a man's condition is stable after he was shot by police during an alleged hostage situation on the north side of Indianapolis Wednesday morning.
The incident happened shortly before 11:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in the 7800 block of River Road, near North Keystone Avenue and East 79th Street in the Clearwater neighborhood.
Police were responding to what turned out to be a hostage situation. IMPD says they tried to get the people inside to come out.
According to police, the woman started screaming, and a man tried to leave the back of the building. Police said the man started shooting at them, and two officers returned fire, hitting the man once. Police said they found a gun within feet of the man.
According to court documents, the man was struck in his arm and abdomen.
Medics took the man to a hospital, where his condition was described as stable.
The woman inside the apartment was not injured. No officers were injured either.
According to court documents, the woman told detectives she had been in a relationship with the man and had recently broken up. The woman said the man had been "progressively getting more emotionally unstable," a detective wrote, and that he threatened to shoot her.
The officers involved had body cameras on during the incident. The two officers who fired their guns have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in police shootings. On Sept. 19, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey identified the officers involved as 9-year veteran Officer Michelle Clegg and 14-year veteran Sgt. Evan Meyer.
This is the 11th police shooting in Marion County this year. So far, eight people have been killed and two people were hurt. In one shooting, an officer fired but no one was hit.

The Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police released the following statement on the incident:
"Today (9/11/2024) public media reports show Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department risked their lives to rescue a female hostage and protect her from a deadly threat.
Their decisive actions quite possibly saved her life while they withstood gunfire in doing so.
We look forward to further information on the heroic performance of these policing professionals.
As we approach the anniversary date of Fallen IMPD Officer Rod Bradway (End of Watch: 9/20/13), who tragically lost his life in a similar incident, it should not be lost on on anyone what our Officers put to risk in protecting the communities they serve.
These Officers stand in a long line of heroes including those Police Officers we honor today on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
May God continue to protect those who stand the thin blue line."
