Woman shot on Indy's near east side dies after showing up at hospital

Police said the shooting happened at a gas station in 1400 block of Prospect Street, near Spruce Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a woman shot on Indianapolis' near east side early Thursday died after showing up at Methodist Hospital.

Shortly after 2:30 a.m. March 14, officers responded to the hospital for a report of a walk-in person shot, locating a woman with apparent gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the hospital, police said.

The Marion County Coroner identified the victim as 31-year-old Candace Patrice Powell late Thursday evening.

An IMPD spokesperson said in a statement that the incident is believed to have happened in the parking lot of the Marathon gas station in the 1400 block of Prospect Street, near Spruce Street.

Investigators are now looking for information about the person who drove the victim to the hospital and the suspect who pulled the trigger.

“Detectives believe this started with some kind of disturbance between two individuals that likely knew each other. We are still trying to understand the exact circumstances and the exact relationship these individuals may have had,” said IMPD Lt. Shane Foley.

In an update Thursday evening, IMPD said detectives determined the woman was dropped off at the hospital in her own car, which was located by detectives Thursday. The person who dropped the victim off has not been located, police said.

This shooting marks the second homicide in 24 hours.

On Wednesday, a 24-year-old was found shot and killed behind an abandoned home on the near west side.

According to the latest numbers from IMPD, the city has had 31 criminal homicides this year compared to 36 at this time last year.

When it comes to nonfatal shootings, those incidents are down 20 percent.

Despite the reduction, IMPD said each number is still a life lost — including this most recent homicide.

“First and foremost, I want to point out that we lost a life,” Foley said. “We are hopeful that members of our community will step forward to provide information to help us solve this crime.”

The Marion County Coroner's Office called the death a homicide and will release the woman's name once family has been notified.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Detective Connie Pearson at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email Connie.Pearson@indy.gov. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
