18-year-old killed in southwest Indianapolis shooting

The shooting happened near South Holt Road and Kentucky Avenue around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a teenager was killed in a shooting on Indianapolis' southwest side early Wednesday.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 18-year-old Wyatt Andrew Payton.

Around 4 a.m. Nov. 29, officers responded to the 3200 block of South Holt Road, south of Kentucky Avenue, for a report of a disturbance with a possible person shot. There they located Payton in the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene, IMPD said.

An IMPD spokesperson said preliminary information leads police to believe a disturbance between two people who knew each other had occurred outside, and another person intervened at some point before eventually firing at least one shot.

That third person, a teen male, was not at the scene when officers arrived but returned and was taken into custody for questioning, police said. After talking with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office, police later released the teen taken into custody pending further investigation.

Officers are not looking for anyone in connection with the incident and believe they have identified everyone involved, the spokesperson said, adding there is no believed ongoing threat to the public.

Anyone with information on the incident, including possible surveillance/doorbell video, is asked to contact Detective Steven Gray at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or email Steven.Gray@indy.gov.

Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.
