WATCH: IMPD officer wounded in east Indianapolis shooting goes home from hospital

The shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. Friday in the area of East 36th and North Wittfield streets.

INDIANAPOLIS — An IMPD officer who was shot and wounded while responding to a report of shots fired last week is out of the hospital.

Ofc. Steven Rzyski, an 8-year veteran of the department, walked out of his hospital room to applause and well wishes of doctors medical staff Thursday, Aug. 1. Several of his fellow officers also lined the hallways, cheering as Rzyski walked out of Eskenazi Hospital.

IMPD said earlier in the week that no arrests have been made for the shooting. Two people were arrested on unrelated charges, including resisting law enforcement, after police chased a car they thought might be connected.

Investigators are still trying to determine if the two people were involved in the shooting of the officer.

In a statement on Monday, July 29, an IMPD spokesperson said that Rzyski was in good spirits, sharing a photo of the officer walking at the hospital.

The shooting happened shortly before 9 p.m. July 26 in the area of East 36th and North Wittfield streets, which is just east of Post Road.

An IMPD spokesperson said officers were investigating a report of shots fired in the area when more shots were fired at officers, striking an eight-year veteran of the department.

Rzyski was transported by his fellow officers to Eskenazi Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to his abdomen and another to his right arm, IMPD Chief Chris Bailey said early Saturday.

IMPD is investigating after an officer was wounded in a shooting July 26, 2024, near East 36th and North Wittfield streets.

The officer's condition is described as "stable," and he is expected to make a full recovery, Bailey said, after spending "some days" in the hospital.

In an update Saturday afternoon, Bailey said Rzyski was in "great spirits" and "thankful for the support from the community and his colleagues."

An IMPD spokesperson said that houses in the area of the shooting were struck by gunfire, but no other injuries have been reported.

"Our community does not want this. They do not want any violence in their neighborhoods, let alone any violence against police with whom they want in their neighborhoods," Bailey said.

No IMPD officers fired their weapon during the incident, the spokesperson said.

"Any time a law enforcement officer is attacked in our city or anywhere else, it's not just an attack on that individual or this police officer or profession — it's an attack on our community," Bailey said.

Police urged residents in the area to stay indoors while they conducted a search of the area, looking for a suspect. After using K-9s, drones and SWAT officers, IMPD said a suspect had not been located, but there was no longer believed to be a threat to the immediate area.

Indiana State Police is assisting IMPD with the investigation, Bailey said.

Police are asking anyone who may have seen a person or vehicle connected to the shooting, or neighbors who may have captured something on a home security camera, to contact Det. Erika Jones at the IMPD Homicide Office at 317-327-3475 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 317-262-8477.
