INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD on Wednesday announced the arrest of one of its own officers for domestic battery in the presence of a child.
On Tuesday, Nov. 26, around 9 p.m., the Whiteland Police Department responded to the 200 block of Country Wood Drive, near U.S. 31 and County Road 600 North, "following a report of domestic violence," IMPD said in a statement the next morning. "During the investigation, officers determined the complainant had been battered and restrained."
The officer, a seven-year veteran of IMPD who was currently assigned to the department's east district, was arrested on one preliminary count of domestic battery and one preliminary count of strangulation, the department said.
(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects in cases until formal charges are filed by prosecutors.)
The Johnson County Prosecutor's Office will make final charging decisions in the case.
"When it was discovered that one of the involved parties was an off-duty IMPD officer, detectives from IMPD’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) were contacted," IMPD said in a statement. "SIU will provide assistance if requested during the investigation."
The officer will be placed on administrative leave pending an internal review of the incident upon his release, IMPD said, adding that the officer's department-issued equipment had been collected and their police authority had been suspended.
IMPD's Internal Affairs Department will conduct an administrative investigation "to assess potential departmental violations and present the findings to the Chief of Police for review," the department said.
