Man critically injured after being shot by IMPD officers on Indy's west side

According to IMPD, no officers were injured.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after officers were involved in a police shooting Tuesday morning that left one man critically injured.

Around 11:30 a.m., IMPD officers responded to a call of a person shot in the 5100 block of West Vermont Street, just east of Interstate 465.

When officers arrived, they found a man who had a gun. IMPD Assistant Chief Michael Wolley said officers told the man more than 16 times to "drop the gun," and that multiple officers reported that the suspect pointed a gun at them several times.

Wolley said, at some point, two IMPD officers discharged their weapons. IMPD said medics rendered aid to the man and took him to the hospital in critical condition.

"Once again, we find ourselves in a situation where trauma ripples out within our community and I recognize the impact that this has on our community, the involved and our officers," Wolley said.

Wolley said detectives found a handgun at the scene, near where the suspect was found. He added that detectives didn't find any evidence of another person shot other than the suspect.

Wolley said detectives found a note inside of the home saying that the suspect planned to take his own life.

"The suspect told medics that he shot himself multiple times and that he wanted to die," Wolley said.

According to IMPD, no officers were injured. IMPD does not believe there is any active threat to the community, but is asking residents to avoid the area.

IMPD said all of its officers were equipped with body-worn cameras, which were activated during this incident.

The two officers that fired their firearms have been placed on administrative leave, per IMPD's policy.

IMPD Critical Incident Response Team responded to the scene to conduct a criminal investigation. A separate investigation is being conducted by IMPD Internal Affairs.

If you have any information on this incident, IMPD is asking you to call Homicide Det. Larry Craciunoiu at 317-327-3475 or anonymously call Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-(TIPS).
