17-year-old girl found dead in roadway on Indy's south side

The incident was reported around 11:30 p.m. Monday along Madison Avenue, near Stop 11 Road.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD is investigating after a 17-year-old girl was found dead in the roadway on the city's south side late Monday.

Around 11:30 p.m. June 3, officers responded to the 8200 block of Madison Avenue, just south of East Stop 11 Road, for a report of a person down in the roadway.

Officers arrived and found a person in the roadway "with injuries consistent with trauma," according to IMPD.

Medics pronounced the person dead at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 17-year-old Michael L. Berry, and determined she died due to multiple blunt force injuries, and her manner of death was ruled an accident.

Witnesses told officers that they did not see a car hit the teen and that she was already down on the road when they arrived.

At this time, detectives do not know how Berry got in the roadway. Detectives are investigating and exploring all possibilities of who may be involved.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Detective Kelly Rhoda at the IMPD Crash Investigations Office at 317-327-6549 or email the detective at Kelly.Rhoda@indy.gov.

Tips can also be made anonymously to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-8477.

(NOTE: IMPD initially said officers were investigating the incident as a deadly hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian. IMPD clarified Tuesday afternoon that detectives do not know how the victim got in the roadway.)
