2 men injured, 1 critically, in shooting after youth football game at Cardinal Ritter High School

According to IMPD, officers responded to the high school around 10:18 p.m. on Oct. 5 on a report of a person shot.

INDIANAPOLIS — Two men were shot on the campus of Cardinal Ritter High School during a youth football game Saturday night.

According to IMPD, officers responded to the high school around 10:18 p.m. on Oct. 5 on a report of a multiple people shot. When officers arrived, they found two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds.

IMPD says both victims were taken to Eskenazi Hospital. One is in stable condition while the other is listed as critical. Officers were close to the scene when the shooting broke out and were able to render the victims aid until IEMS arrived.

According to IMPD Capt. Rob Rider, a youth football game had just concluded when an argument broke out between the two sidelines, which included parents and coaches. The argument reportedly escalated and someone pulled out a gun and shot two people.

IMPD says no children were injured in the shooting. There is no suspect information at this time, nor does IMPD have a person of interest, but police say there is no threat to the public.

"It's a very sad and unfortunate ending to a football game," said Capt. Rider. "Families and kids should be able to go and enjoy a little league football game and not expect to get shot."

The shooting reportedly did not happen on the field, but instead it occurred outside the stadium, according to Capt. Rider.

"This incident has nothing to do with Ritter High School," said Capt. Rider. "Ritter High School allows teams of multiple ages to use this field. So the students and parents that go here have no relation to this incident.
