INDIANAPOLIS — Update: IMPD Officer Tommy Thompson said Tuesday, Oct. 8 that security footage has provided persons of interest that the detective is working to identify.
Two men were shot on the campus of Cardinal Ritter High School on Indianapolis' near northwest side after a youth football game Saturday night.
According to IMPD, officers responded to the school, near West 30th Street and West Kessler Boulevard North Drive, around 10:15 p.m. Oct. 5 on a report of multiple people shot. When they arrived, they found two men with gunshot wounds.
IMPD said both victims were taken to Eskenazi Hospital, one in critical condition and the other described as "stable." Officers were close to the school when the shooting happened and assisted the victims until medics arrived.
According to IMPD Capt. Rob Rider, a youth football game had just concluded when an argument broke out between the two sidelines, which included parents and coaches. The argument reportedly escalated, and someone pulled out a gun and shot two people.
IMPD says no children were injured in the shooting. There is no suspect information at this time, nor does IMPD have a person of interest, but police said there is no threat to the public.
"It's a very sad and unfortunate ending to a football game," Rider said. "Families and kids should be able to go and enjoy a little league football game and not expect to get shot."
The shooting reportedly did not happen on the field, but instead, it occurred outside the stadium, according to Rider.
"This incident has nothing to do with Ritter High School," Rider said. "Ritter High School allows teams of multiple ages to use this field. So the students and parents that go here have no relation to this incident."
Shortly before 1 p.m. the following day, Cardinal Ritter released a statement regarding the incident that read, in part:
"It is crucial to emphasize that this event was not affiliated with Cardinal Ritter High School in any capacity. The Youth League that used to our Field was immediately notified that access had been permanently revoked."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
