IMPD: Suspect arrested in deadly shooting on Indy's near east side

The incident was reported around 1 p.m. Wednesday on South Gray Street, near East Washington Street.

INDIANAPOLIS — IMPD arrested a suspect Wednesday in connection with a deadly shooting on Indianapolis' near east side earlier in the day.

The shooting was reported around 1 p.m. Sept. 4 on South Gray Street, near East Washington and South Rural streets.

Responding officers located a man who had been shot, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Marion County Coroner's Office identified the deceased as 40-year-old Craig Esmon Jacobs.

Later that day, officers responded to the 2800 block of East Edgewood Avenue, near McFarland Road on Indianapolis' south side, for a report of an armed person, who was believed to be the suspect in the Gray Street shooting, an IMPD spokesperson said in a statement.

IMPD Aviation Unit and SWAT officers took the suspect, a 53-year-old man, into custody "without incident," and he was arrested on a preliminary murder charge, police said.
