HUNTINGTON, Ind. — The cause and manner of death has been released for an Indianapolis woman who died in her jail cell Sunday morning.

Schakia L. Yates, 37, was found unresponsive in a cell at the Huntington County Jail on March 3. She was being held alone in a medical cell due to a history of medical issues.

Upon discovering Yates, police say jail staff provided medical aid and called EMS, who took over lifesaving care of Yates when they arrived, but were not able to revive her.

Yates was pronounced dead at the scene.

On March 6, the Huntington County Coroner's Office said Yates experienced a "pulmonary embolism that originated in the leg," and the manner of death has been ruled natural.

Police said Yates had been incarcerated at the jail for a little more than a year. Her family has been notified of her death, state police said in a release.
