GREENWOOD, Ind. — A Greenwood man is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot his brother in the back at a home near East Worthsville and Sheek roads.
The suspect was arrested on Aug. 23.
(NOTE: 13News has chosen not to identify the suspect to protect the identities of the victims.)
His family told police he shot his brother, and the fight started over ribs.
Family says the suspect spent most of the day cooking for his brother's going-away party, ahead of Navy boot camp. When he finally made his way into the house, almost all of the food was gone. The suspect had not been drinking, but the brother had.
Family says the suspect and his brother started "play fighting." One family member says the suspect tried to stop but got punched in the face and became more angry. The fight allegedly lasted 20 minutes before they were finally pulled apart for the last time.
The suspect then allegedly said, "I'm getting a gun" and went upstairs to his bedroom.
The suspect's sister said she told the suspect she was taking their brother and leaving. The suspect allegedly followed her, and they found their brother standing at the bottom of the stairs. Their mother was standing nearby as well. That's when the suspect allegedly fired a shot, hitting both his brother and his mother.
His brother left but collapsed outside the home, struggling to breathe. His mother didn't realize she had been shot until she saw she was bleeding while helping her injured son.
Doctors at the hospital told police the shot ended up hitting the brother in his liver and one lung. The mother was injured on her forearm.
The suspect's brother told police he didn't remember the shooting.
