NEW PALESTINE, Ind. — A Greenfield man is in custody for the shooting death of an 18-year-old man in New Palestine Wednesday.
New Palestine police officers responded to a report of a person shot Nov. 22 on South Eclipse Way. The officers found the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest and rendered aid until medics arrived.
The victim was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died from his injuries.
He was later identified as 18-year-old Evan Neumeister. The Sugar Creek Township Fire Department and Hancock County Sheriff's Department said their thoughts were with the family.
On Monday, the Hancock County 4-H group mourned the death of both Neumeister and 17-year-old Lindsay Locker, who was killed in a car crash over the weekend.
"Evan Neumeister and Lindsay Locker, were active 4-Hers who succeeded in their many 4-H endeavors, contributed to the community in significant ways, and have left a positive impact on their peers, younger 4-Hers and adult mentors," the post reads.
Police arrested a 20-year-old man from Greenfield for what they called an "accidental" shooting. The suspect was taken to the Hancock County Jail on preliminary charges of involuntary manslaughter and criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon.
(NOTE: 13News does not name suspects until charges have been filed by prosecutors.)
The Hancock County Prosecutor's Office will determine final charges in the case.
