MUNCIE, Ind. — A man wanted for drunk driving and hitting a 2-year-old girl almost 12 years ago has finally been captured.
The U.S. Marshal's Service captured Doroteo C. Chavez in San Antonio, Texas. He will remain there until he can be extradited back to Indiana.
Chavez is facing charges of failing to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury, driving under the influence causing serious bodily injury, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, failure to return to the scene of an accident and failure to appear.
On Aug. 18, 2012, officers were called to a trailer at 5600 W. Kilgore Avenue.
According to police, 2-year-old Alexandria K. Nelson was crossing the street when she was hit by a car.
Chavez allegedly told police he was just driving through the trailer park when the girl ran out in front of him. Police said they could smell alcohol on Chavez and that he had slurred speech. They also could not find any skid marks or other signs Chavez tried to stop after hitting the girl.
Chavez was able to post bond and then allegedly fled the state.
