INDIANAPOLIS — A former Indianapolis firefighter facing felony charges after his arrest at an IFD fire station was sentenced to probation as part of a plea deal.
Nathanial Waldroup will serve four years probation – with no jail time – for strangulation, domestic battery, criminal mischief and criminal confinement. Kidnapping charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
A police report showed Waldroup was arrested after officers responded to reports of a woman who was battered on the near east side in 2022.
According to court records, Waldroup held his girlfriend captive in his car for over three hours. The victim reportedly had bruising and cuts on her legs, hands, hip and lip and told police that, at one point, Waldroup drove to a dead-end alley near a field and threatened to kill both of them.
Waldroup was facing felony charges for criminal confinement, kidnapping and strangulation, along with misdemeanor charges of battery and domestic battery.
Waldroup will also have to undergo domestic violence counseling and other evaluations.
IFD said Waldroup had been with the department for two years but was placed on unpaid leave after his arrest. Waldroup resigned from IFD in March 2023.
