Former Indianapolis firefighter avoids prison with plea deal for kidnapping, confinement

Nathanial Waldroup was facing several charges stemming from an incident at an east Indianapolis residence where a woman was reportedly battered.

INDIANAPOLIS — A former Indianapolis firefighter facing felony charges after his arrest at an IFD fire station is taking a plea deal.

A police report showed Nathanial Waldroup was arrested after officers responded to reports of a woman who was battered on the near east side in 2022.

According to court records, Waldroup held his girlfriend captive in his car for over three hours. The victim reportedly had bruising and cuts on her legs, hands, hip and lip and told police that, at one point, Waldroup drove to a dead-end alley near a field and threatened to kill both of them.

Waldroup was facing felony charges for criminal confinement, kidnapping and strangulation, along with misdemeanor charges of battery and domestic battery.

According to the plea agreement, Waldroup will plead guilty to criminal confinement, strangulation, domestic battery and criminal mischief. All other counts will be dismissed.

The agreement has his sentence being suspended and will instead place him on probation for several years. He will also have to undergo domestic violence counseling and other evaluations.

IFD said Waldroup had been with the department for two years but was placed on unpaid leave after his arrest. Waldroup resigned from IFD in March of 2023.

A change of plea hearing is scheduled for Jan. 3.
