Fleeing suspect fatally shot during gunfire exchange with police in northwest Indiana

Police in Porter County fatally shot a fleeing man during an exchange of gunfire Thursday, authorities said.

VALPARAISO, Ind. — Police in northwestern Indiana fatally shot a fleeing man during an exchange of gunfire Thursday, authorities said.

In an update April 30, Indiana State Police said the incident began around 2 p.m. April 25, when officers with the Valparaiso Police Department and the Porter County Sheriff's Department responded to the area of Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso to investigate a report that a man had been displaying a gun.

Officers found a man who matched the description given, and the man ran from them before "shooting several times at the officers and at a police vehicle," a state police spokesperson said in a statement.

Officers returned fire and chased the man through an alley. The man then ran onto the porch of a house and raised his gun at officers, who shot him, police said.

The man was taken to Northwest Health Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and state police said information will be turned over to the Porter County prosecutor for review once it concludes.
