INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — Federal charges have been filed against the suspect in the killing of an Indianapolis mail carrier.
Tony D. Cushingberry-Mays, 21, is charged with Murder in the Second Degree; Assaulting, Resisting or Impeding Certain Officers or Employees; Discharging a Firearm during and in Relation to a Crime of Violence.
He's accused of shooting Angela Summers on North Denny Street while she was working her mail route April 27.
Summers was rushed to the hospital and died from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Federal court documents show the mail to the home at 426 North Denny Street had been held because of an issue with their dog.
Cushingberry was arrested on April 28. He told investigators that the letter carrier was not delivering the mail because she was having a problem with the dog at his home.
Cushingberry said that when the mail carrier did not deliver the mail to their house, he began following her asking for it. He followed her to the porch of another house at which point she sprayed him with mace. He said at that point he pulled his gun and shot Summers.
Cushingberry said he did not mean to kill Summers, but wanted to scare her.
